Amazing China

Watching a great show tonight on business in China. Took a bunch of
notes and thinking about how to be creative in doing business in
China. For example, I learned that there are 400 million mobile users
in China that do not use the web yet. That Oreos hit their stride in
China only after modifying the taste (made it less sweet). And Baidu
created it's own social networking platform called Ask Baidu to try a
stay ahead of Google which is in no mood to stay in second place
there. I have been to China maybe 10 times and I am always amazed at
how much opportunity there is for those that see it.

Xiao Long Bao

I  was working last week in Shanghai (MFG.com) and had the chance to experience something unique and delicious.  Xiao Long Bao (dumplings) right on the street.  If you find yourself in Shanghai or elsewere perhaps in China you need to try this.  For only something like $2 you can get served 5 large Xiao Long Bao from the front window of the stall.  Xiao Long Bao are like large round ravioli balls with pork inside and a small amount of scalding hot broth.  We ordered on the street and took them upstairs to the communal tables at this particular place and threw them back with a nice bottle of Tsing Tao.  Here's a shot form the place we ate.

Shanghai Art Scene

I am in Shanghai for the weekend and a local friend of mine took me to a part of the city where there is a street called Moganshan Road that is reconfiguring itself as the up and coming art scene in the city.  We walked through a vast array of literally thousands and thousands of condominiums to this quiet little zone where the wall of just this street are covered in graffiti and leading to a sort of old factory/warehouse district where inside are the fantastic works of original art.  The art is so different than anything you might see in other parts of the world because it is a strange mix of Western style art with of course Chinese influence.  I saw ancient Roman/Greek style art featuring Chinese faces, paintings of modern cars sinking in the rivers, enormous paintings of math lessons in Chinese, and a host of other really great works.   Lines 3 & 4 in the metro will take you there.   Here are a few shots for you:
